Feb 24 – 4000 Islands and a Waterfall

Views of the Mekong River from our resort.

First thing this morning we walked down to the pier at the hotel and boarded a long-boat for a 10 minute ride across a portion of the Mekong River.

Saw car ferries during the crossing…

and another long-boat, this one ferrying a guy on a motorcycle.  Looked pretty top heavy.

Once we disembarked we joined our guide and boarded a van for a 40-minute drive south to Nakasang Port.  From here we boarded another longboat for a ride though a very small portion of the 4000 Islands area.  The area is very pretty with the water dotted with small and medium sized islands and it was a lovely ride.

We stopped at a local village along the way.  Tara gave out the last of her toiletry gifts.

This village had a lot of weavers, young and old, so we got to watch them weave baskets from grasses.

At the end of the long drive we ended up at Nagasang Ferry port.

There we boarded a longboat for a cruise through a very small portion of the 4000 Islands.

The ride took us to Det Island where boarded a tuk-tuk for a drive…

to our restaurant...

where we had lunch overlooking the water.

A menu typo/interesting wording.

The resident cat.

Then it was back onto the tuk-tuks for a ride around Det Island.

The guide pointed out a rusting railroad, the Don Det-Don Khon Railway.   The railroad connected the islands of Det and Khon.  It ran from 1893 to the 1940’s.  It was the only railroad operating in Laos until 2009.

The drive ended at a small port where we several of us got ice cream bars as we waited for the boat.  Then it was back in a longboat for a short ride to the Nakasang Ferry Port...

and a relatively short drive to the next big stop…the Khone Phapheng Waterfall on the Mekong River.  It was really more of a cascade than a waterfall but it was still pretty impressive.

The walk to the waterfall and more photos of cascades.

The Mani Khothtee Temple at the waterfall.

From there it was a long drive back to our port on the Mekong.  We had a bit of a sunset during the drive.

By the time we got to our port the moon was up and pretty spectacular in the sky.

We had good views of it as our longboat made it across the Mekong to our hotel dock.

The ride was accomplished using a large flashlight held by the boatman.  No running lights for this operation.
